Retro Revival: Bring '60s Fashion to Your Modern Day Closet
We've seen it before: ‘70s and ‘80s in fashion making a comeback recently. So why not incorporate some of the most memorable ‘60s fashion into our styling this season? If you’re trying to keep your wardrobe looking fresh and versatile, mix it up with timeless ‘60s inspired pieces. Luckily, these gems are making their way into stores and brands’ inventory so they’re not impossible to find. It truly takes your outfits to the next level when you are able to embody vintage icons while keeping things fresh with modern accents.
Some may disagree, but polka dots are a timeless print that should be welcomed into the fashion world again (and without questioning). Envision this: it’s springtime and you see floral prints left and right but through the crowd, a ruffled baby pink and olive green polka dot sundress dress catches your eye. Could we ask for a better visual? Polka dots were huge in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and made outfits preppy and sophisticated, especially with ruffled babydoll style dresses.
So what are some different ways to style polka dots into our everyday wear? Black and white polka dots give a touch of sleek and simple, all while keeping that vintage appeal in the mix. A tweed polka-dotted blazer is a preppy piece, and also takes any outfit to another level. In reference to size: bigger does seem to be better when it comes to what type of polka dots look best with our modern style of clothing. A black and yellow top with puffy sleeves and a plunge neck is the perfect mix of modern with a retro twist and can be dressed up or down. This perfect street style top with black jeans and black heels makes the dream a reality.
Another quintessential component of the ‘60s fashion aesthetic is the head scarf. This accessory is able to protect your hair while adding class to any ensemble. Head scarves come in an abundance of fresh spring patterns and colors to choose from, as well as many luxe fabrics to make the perfect addition to your spring wardrobe. To tie the scarf in true ‘60s fashion, bring together two opposite ends of the scarf and fold into a triangle, place the folded edge along your hairline, and tie the two long ends together just below your chin. If preferred, you can wrap the tied ends toward the back of your neck and tie again for a true Audrey Hepburn look.
Last but not least: the shoes. Now, who agrees with us that shoes can make or break an outfit? Kitten heels are definitely making a comeback this year, and they’re perfect for spring and summer. Whether it’s low pointed-toe heels, chunky mules, or even patent leather boots, they’re all recycled from past decades and TBH? We’re all the better for it.
