Breaking the Barrier Between Black and Brown

It has been a well established rule in fashion that black can not go with brown, they simply clash. However, rules were meant to be broken, especially in fashion. The rebirth of all the current trends has been rooted in the concept that โ€œanything goes,โ€ so why not put black and brown together? This color combination has been seen in fashion throughout the years; from animal prints, like cheetah, to neutrals; black and brown has been serving looks since the 30s. These styles prove that black and brown, while clashing, can also make a statement. Black and brown has been adapted into various styles that can be seen in up-scale designer fashion to minimalist styles.

Streetwear

The Kardashians made it happen. The introduction of brown into current fashion was brought to us by the icons themselves, the Kardashian family. The rise in popularity of this once heinously avoided color shifted fashion to the neutral and earthy color tones. Black and brown can be found paired together on any street. The popular look of brown tops and baggy black pants has made a huge dent in streetwear, but it does not stop there.

Vintage/Academia

Black and brown leather has been a staple for decades, a leather jacket brings any outfit together and adds a level of sheek and sophistication to any look. The vintage style of this color combination can be seen with other neutral colors such as sage green and cream. This look can be styled in outfits with the use of black/brown leather jackets, sweaters, plaid skirts, and even blazers. The neutral color tones provide an earthy look while also giving a sense of cohesiveness and style.

Girl Boss

Even in the office, black and brown put in the work. The minimalist adaptation of this color trend can be seen in business attire, such as blazers and dress pants. Pairing black and brown together for your office look is a power move. The addition of brown to an all black business outfit gives dimension and elevates the look. While the monochrome power suits have made a large imprint in the fashion industry, their moment is over and combining these two colors is in.

It is time we put to rest this fashion myth that black clashes with brown. This year, it is time to challenge the fashion rules set in place before us and it is time to wear what you want. Fashion is evolving rapidly and nothing should hold you back from discovering your wardrobe. The barrier between black and brown has been broken, now what is next?
