Turning Passion into Fashion
The pandemic inspired a surge of creativity, this is especially true for Zoë Tsoukalas who managed to create a business during this challenging time; ultimately turning her adversity into a period of personal growth. Zoläla Designz is a creative and unique small business run by a member of A-Line Magazine’s event team. The brand is known for its unique jewelry pieces, colorful clothing designs, and creative miscellaneous items. Zoë has been successful at a variety of market stores and has even launched her own website.
Below is an interview I conducted with Zoë to better understand how Zoläla became established.
What inspired you to start Zoläla Designz?
Zoläla Designz was born from a love of creativity and a desire to be unique. I started making my own clothes because I enjoyed knowing no one else had the same thing. Making people feel special and embracing individuality is at the heart of my brand.
My mom and grandma were also a big source of support, creativity, and encouragement. They believed in my creative abilities and helped me take the step towards turning my passion into a brand. Together, these influences have shaped Zoläla.
What is the meaning behind the name?
The name Zoläla Designz is a blend of my name, Zoë, and my dog Lola's name. Combining these names felt like a natural representation of the personal touch I put into every piece I create.
How did you come to know your creative talents?
I've always been curious and eager to learn. My journey into creativity began at a young age when I discovered the art of hand sewing. With the patient guidance of my grandmother, I delved into various techniques. Her mentorship ignited a passion that continues to drive my creative endeavors today. It's through this early foundation that I came to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that goes into handmade clothing and jewelry, eventually leading to the establishment of Zoläla Designz.
Who is your target market group?
I don't have a specific target market. I create for anyone who wants to feel unique. I've had customers ranging from six-year-olds to people in their 70s, and it's been wonderful to see such a diverse group appreciating my work.
What was Zoläla Designz's first product?
My first Zoläla piece was a pair of custom Louis Vuitton jeans. They were green with hand-painted, colorful emblems, each one carefully embroidered. It was a special creation that kick-started Zoläla Designz, showcasing the unique and handmade touch that defines my brand.
Did you think you would be where you are now when you first started Zoläla Designz?
When I first started Zoläla Designz, I never could have imagined that I'd be where I am today. The level of love and appreciation for my designs has been truly overwhelming. The support I've received from customers and the positivity they bring to my brand is beyond anything I anticipated. I feel incredibly blessed to have gained such a wonderful community around my work. Their enthusiasm has been a driving force in propelling Zoläla Designz to where it is today, and for that, I'm immensely grateful.
Finally, what is your ultimate goal for Zoläla Designz?
My ultimate goal for Zoläla Designz is to become a well-known brand, one that people instantly recognize. I want my creations to make people feel truly special and confident when they wear them. There's a powerful sense of empowerment that comes from donning something unique and handmade. I also hope to collaborate with other fashion designers in the future.
Zoë Tsoukalas, the designer behind @Zolala.designz (Instagram handle), has established a successful small business as a Texas A&M college student. Her unique brand and passion for expressing individuality are key drivers in the advancement of her company. Zoë’s commitment to customers is exemplified through her quality and distinctive work of all products and clothing pieces. It is clear that Zoë Tsoukalas has an extremely creative mind when it comes to fashion design.
