How TikTok is Revolutionizing the Music Industry

“Say So,” “Savage,” “Mood Swings,” and so many more hit songs have gained their fame through TikTok, the video creation app that has become insanely popular over the last couple of years. The effect that TikTok has had on the music industry can be seen by millions. This is especially since many songs that are played on the radio or have hit record numbers on music apps like Spotify or Apple Music were first heard on TikTok.

This sensation of songs going viral due to trends on TikTok is a very new phenomenon in today’s world. It only takes a short video with a few seconds of music for people to become interested and search for the song. Once those few seconds of music become widely used on TikTok, hundreds of thousands of videos are made and subsequently viewed by millions of people. It’s no secret that the music industry has changed immensely since the internet and smartphones were created, but the popularity of TikTok has changed the game completely.

Big artists like Megan Thee Stallion, Doja Cat, and others had been popular before TikTok, but the dance trends that have blown up on the app have introduced their music to millions of first-time listeners. Older songs that were once popular have also made a comeback through these trends, and their music has once again become a staple for younger people that weren’t around when the songs first came out. TikTok has also helped artists who didn’t have a large following gain attention and establish a platform. An example of this is Flo Milli, a young female rapper whose name is now widely known thanks to the app. These artists have all created music that is specific to Gen Z, and TikTok plays a huge role in that.

According to TikTok’s website, they recognize the impact they have had and want to keep doing it. An article reflecting on the year 2020 says, “Powered by its community, TikTok became America's go-to platform for music discovery, as well as a launching pad for smash hits by artists of all genres.” TikTok enjoys the product they have created; one where millions get to blend music with creative video making. They also realize the effect the pandemic had on music and understand that TikTok likely played a huge role in sharing it at a time when hardly any new albums or singles were coming out.

This change in music may take some getting used to for artists and producers, but overall, the movement has proved to be positive. After all, TikTok has helped countless up-and-coming artists, distributed content to millions, and created a platform for people to learn from and enjoy. Happy scrolling!
